Swedish protein chemist Arne Tiselius won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1948, for developing two new systems (electrophoresis in 1930, and adsorption analysis in 1943) for separating proteins on the basis of their migration in an electric field. Using and improving his techniques, he made great strides in detecting colloids (gelatinous or mucinous substances found in tissues) and determined and described the complex nature of proteins in blood serum. In 1937 he confirmed that there are four distinct groups of proteins albumins and alpha, beta, and gamma globulins. His electrophoresis technique is still commonly used in biochemistry, and Tiselius is credited as the "father of electrophoresis".

As an undergraduate he worked as a research assistant in The Svedberg's laboratory at the University of Uppsala. More than a decade after winning his Nobel honor, he served as chairman of the Nobel Foundation, and in 1963 he noted that "The world is full of people who should get the Nobel Prize but haven't got it and won't get it."
