Appointed President of Indiana University in 1885, he was at 34 the nation's youngest college president. At the request of Senator Leland Stanford, he became the first President of Stanford University, building the school's reputation and then rebuilding it after the earthquake of 1906. Famed for his scientific knowledge, Jordan used his public platform to speak against war, which he viewed as a violation of natural selection -- killing the fittest of humanity, and leaving the weak, infirm, and cowardly to continue the species.
