After WWII, Bonn became a part of the British Sector. Despite its provincial nature, Bonn was capital of West Germany between 1949 and 1990, and the seat of government until 1999. Much of the German bureaucracy remains in Bonn to this day.

Bad Godesberg and Beuel were incorporated into Bonn in 1969, more than doubling the city's size.
