With Crips and Bloods battling in the streets, rookie cop Danny McGavin is paired with veteran Bob Hodges in the CRASH unit, Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums. Controversial in 1988, the LAPD tried to stop it from being shown at local venues. Dennis Hopper's foray into social realism, the original screenplay was set in Chicago, but Hopper made rewriting it to South Central Los Angeles a contingency of his direction.
