REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 17-Apr-2006) I saw this movie on TV also in
74. They had a TV movie every week back then, I saw the previews the
week before and couldn't wait for this movie. I didn't know Martin
Sheen's brother (in the movie) was his real brother until this search for
info. I gave it 4 stars but I'm sure its not for everybody. Its a
hotrod, guy movie. From what I remember, two guys are speeding thru
this hick town -- Vic Morrow the cop gives chase and rams them on this
kinda DEAD MANS CURVE and kills them - Big brother Martin Sheen comes
to get even and does. I think he drives a 34 Ford, Black with flames.
Sheen and Morrow duel it out on this same curved road and Morrow comes
out the loser but by the end you almost feel sorry for the bad cop. His
wife and daughter were killed buy a speeder. He was a bad cop but he
was just doing what HERO Batman was doing, I think (LOL). Why don't they
show this on AMC?
Review by Jon Hudson (posted on 23-May-2005) Great movie! Ford hot rod is good, but Vic Morrow's 1957 Plymouth 2 door hardtop cop car is my fave! Lower then the Hot Rod, & those high tailfins, with cool Vic "Combat" Morrow at the wheel makes this a must see movie for car chase movie lovers who think Dukes Of Hazzard is silly. I seen this movie on TV as a teen in 1974, and as adult later & it excited me both times. Takes place in 1958 but the look of it also reminds me of the mid-60s, but the 70s type music stamps that out! Hope it comes to DVD!
Review by anonymous (posted on 7-Jul-2006) Watching this movie for me was
one of those events in ones life that was life changing. I had a
neighborhood friend who could name the make and model of any car, old
or new. At that time I was not much of a car buff but all that changed
after watching "The California Kid." Being 14 years old at the time, I
had no idea how it would effect me. I was hooked -- I was car crazy. I
must have bought every hot rod type magazine, Rat Fink ring, or draw
cars for years. In high school I would carry the magazines with me and
day dream that someday owning one of them. After several customized
cars later, including a complete tear town and rebuild of a 1971
Corvette, Im now completing an afterburning jet powered dragster.
Ought to be fun, little did I know when piloting jets off of aircraft
carriers was a precursor to this. Someday in the near future, Ill
probably purchase the CD and watch it again, and again, and Thank you
Richard Compton!
Review by Don (posted on 30-Mar-2005) Enjoyable time waster, good looking Ford coupe.
Martin Sheen does a nice job of investigating and avenging his kid brother's untimely demise, at the hands of the unstable and arrogant small town cop, played by Vic Morrow.
Nick Nolte and Michelle Phillips deserve honorable mention but they were just along for the ride on this one.
Good movie for the "rebel with a cause" groups.
